Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia to increase S'pore-KL flights replied by QX179R @ Thu, 25 Sep 2008 23:58:33 +0800

Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia to increase S'pore-KL
flights from Dec 1

SINGAPORE: In aviation news, the competition on the
Singapore-Kuala Lumpur (KL) route is heating up.

Tiger Airways announced Thursday it will increase its flights
between the two cities starting from December 1.

Instead of one return flight a day, it will operate up to five
flights each way daily.

Tiger Airways says this will result in more than 40,000 seats a
month each way.

The announcement comes ahead of the next stage of liberalisation of
flights between Singapore and Malaysia, which will start in
December.

Apart from flights to KL, services between Singapore and other key
Malaysian cities are also expected to be liberalised in the next
few years.

In response to queries from Channel NewsAsia, Jetstar Asia says it
will increase its schedule to 19 flights a week between Singapore
and KL, starting from December 1.

Budget carriers from both sides of the Causeway were given access
to the lucrative Singapore-KL route in February 2008.

SINGAPORE, Sept 18 - Singapore Airlines <SIAL.SI>, the
world's biggest carrier by stock market value, said on Thursday it
has received its sixth A380 superjumbo from planemaker Airbus
<EAD.PA>.

Singapore Air said it will put the latest A380, the world's
largest passenger jet, on a second daily flight between Singapore
and London.

Airbus had said on Monday it is sticking to its target of
delivering 12 of its A380 superjumbo aircraft by the end of the
year, after a French newspaper reported the programme was facing
further delays.

I tried calling Tiger Airways hotline numerous times here in sg.
It seems no one ever manages the hotline.

Why bother putting +65 653-TIGER or even "For urgent matters,
you can try our international call centre number at +65 6580 7630"
when no one mans the phones there?

Out of curiosity I stayed on the line for a good 25 minutes and
was still not served.

Higher service and security charges from
next year for air passengers

Passengers leaving Singapore by air will be paying higher
service and security charges from next year.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore cited significantly
higher operating costs for the increases.

It says the higher charges will be slapped on air tickets bought
from November for travel on or after January the 1st next year.

The revision would mean that passengers departing from Changi
Airport’s Terminals 1, 2 and 3 will pay a total of $28 in service
and security charges.

Those departing from the Budget Terminal pay $15 and Seletar

SIA cancels all flights to HK on Friday replied by QX179R @ Sat, 23 Aug 2008 20:45:56 +0800

SIA cancels
all flights to HK on Friday due to Typhoon Nuri

SINGAPORE : Singapore Airline (SIA) has cancelled all of
its six scheduled flights from Singapore to Hong Kong on August 22
due to extreme weather conditions in Hong Kong caused by Typhoon
Nuri.

SIA passengers booked to travel to Hong Kong on August 22 are
advised to not go to the airport, and check the SIA website
for the latest information about flight schedules.

SIA said information about when flights will resume will be advised
when the weather conditions in Hong Kong clear.

SIA said customers booked to travel on August 22 will be
accommodated on flights as early as possible, and information will
be made available when schedules are settled.

For those expecting to meet customers flying in from Hong Kong, the
only SIA flight from Hong Kong on Friday, has already arrived. SQ1,
from San Francisco and Hong Kong, arrived into Singapore at 11.20
am on Friday.

All other flights will not operate until further notice. Aside from
checking flight status information online, passengers can also call
the Changi Airport flight information hotline at 1800-542
4422.

SIA apologises to customers for the disruption, caused by extreme
weather circumstances which are beyond the airline's control. - CNA

SilkAir sees strong regional demand overall replied by QX179R @ Tue, 19 Aug 2008 23:59:42 +0800

AFP - Wednesday, August
20

SilkAir sees strong regional demand overall

SINGAPORE, Aug 19, 2008 (AFP) - Singapore Airlines' regional
unit SilkAir said Tuesday it expected continued strong passenger
demand for its Asian destinations despite high fuel prices and
other challenges.

Chief executive Chin Yau Seng told reporters that SilkAir had
slightly lowered its passenger capacity growth forecast for the
year because of "a few blips" in demand despite the strong overall
sentiment.

"So far we have seen continued strong support to a lot of our
regional points," Chin said, adding the support came from
holidaymakers and business travellers.

SilkAir, whose fiscal year ended in March, reported a 12.3
percent increase in passengers, to 1.82 million.

It said operating profit was 40 million Singapore dollars (28.3
million US), up 100.5 percent, on revenue of 506 million
dollars.

Chin said SilkAir had planned for capacity growth of about eight
to 10 percent this financial year but now foresees five to seven
percent, partly because of the impact of natural disasters in China
and Myanmar.

SilkAir flies to Chengdu, the main city in China's Sichuan
province, a tourist destination struck by a massive earthquake in
May.

A cyclone devastated Myanmar the same month. That country's main
city, Yangon, is also served by the airline.

The carrier also flies to South Asia, other Chinese cities and
secondary destinations in Southeast Asia.

Chin said there had been "some softening of demand to China for
various reasons" over the Olympic period but did not elaborate. The
Beijing Games opened on August 8 and end on Sunday.

"I think this year there are some challenges, fuel being one of
them, but that is part and parcel of the business," Chin said.

High oil prices have sparked the biggest crisis in Asia's
airline industry in several years, and analysts have said some
carriers were likely to go under unless jet fuel costs eased.

Singapore Airlines said last month its net profit in the first
quarter fell 15.4 percent compared with the same period last year
as higher fuel costs cut into rising revenues.

Tiger Airways swings into profit replied by QX179R @ Thu, 07 Aug 2008 21:04:58 +0800

AFP - Thursday, August 7

Low-fare carrier Tiger Airways swings into profit

SINGAPORE, Aug 7, 2008 (AFP) - Budget carrier Tiger Airways said
Thursday it had booked a net profit of 37.8 million Singapore
dollars (27.33 million US) in the financial year to March, despite
higher oil prices and stiff competition.

The carrier said the earnings from its Singapore operations
reversed a loss of 14.3 million dollars in the previous fiscal year
and met a pledge to be profitable within its third year of
operation.

Tiger, 49 percent owned by Singapore Airlines, said revenues
rose 56 percent to 271 million dollars. It said it had a cash
balance of 19.6 million dollars.

The firm said operations from Singapore contributed the profits
as its new Australian domestic service was still expanding.

"Even with the challenging market conditions and current oil
prices we remain confident about the long-term success of both our
Asian and Australian based airlines," said Tiger chief executive
Tony Davis.

"We continue to see strong demand for our low fares and we are
committed to continued growth as we expand our operations in both
Australia and Singapore."

Tiger Airways did not give net profit figures for the fiscal
first quarter to June, but said there was a 57.8 percent increase
in revenue, a 64.9 percent rise in seat capacity and that passenger
numbers climbed 73.7 percent.

Davis said the airline was able to cope with higher fuel costs
by hedging against price rises and maintaining disciplined cost
control.

"Clearly oil has been a challenge for all airlines. But... we're
not seeing the impact that some other airlines are seeing in Europe
and North America of reducing demand," Davis told reporters.

He said the firm was making sure it could cope with higher oil
prices, but stood ready to take advantage of a correction in crude
costs.

Oil prices were trading below 120 dollars a barrel on Thursday
after falling from all-time peaks above 147 dollars last month.

Tiger Airways connects Singapore with destinations in Southeast
Asia, China, Australia and India.

Airbus A380 begins Olympics flights replied by QX179R @ Sat, 02 Aug 2008 19:31:41 +0800

SINGAPORE - The Airbus A380 superjumbo, the world's
biggest passenger aircraft, Saturday began special flights to
Beijing to meet higher demand ahead of the Olympic Games, Singapore
Airlines (SIA) said.

Flight SQ802 left Changi Airport at 8:40 am (0040 GMT), with 25
crew and 385 passengers, among them 12 athletes and 18 officials
from the Singapore team, SIA said in a statement.

The daily flights using the double-decker A380 will last until
August 8 and is aimed at catering to stronger passenger demand in
the week leading up to the Beijing Games.

SIA is the first airline in the world to operate the A380, the
largest airliner ever built which the Singapore carrier now uses to
fly to Sydney, London and Tokyo.

One of two A380s used for the London route has been temporarily
redeployed for the Beijing service.

"Over the next week, several hundred athletes from almost a dozen
countries will fly the A380 to Beijing to compete in the Games,"
SIA said.

The giant aircraft can carry up to 853 passengers but SIA, one of
the world's most profitable airlines, chose a setup with a maximum
of 471 seats to
give passengers more space.

The design includes 12 "suites", each with a full-length bed behind
sliding doors, sheets by French design house Givenchy and
flat-screen televisions. - AFP/vm

Tiger drops flights to Australia's Darwin replied by QX179R @ Fri, 01 Aug 2008 16:28:55 +0800

AFP - Friday, August 1

Tiger drops flights to Australia's Darwin

SINGAPORE, Aug 1, 2008 (AFP) - High fuel and airport costs have
forced Singapore budget carrier Tiger Airways to suspend services
to the Australian city of Darwin from October 26, the airline said
Friday.

"The cost of operating to Darwin is the highest of any airport
on the entire Tiger Airways network," said chief operation officer
Steve Burns.

"Combined airport and fuel costs in Darwin cost more than any of
the 27 airports that the airline serves across Australia and Asia,"
he said. "It is just incompatible for a true low-fare airline."

Tiger will continue to assess the situation and resume services
in the future "if costs become more reasonable."

Affected passengers will get a full refund.

Tiger will continue to fly between Singapore and Perth and from
Melbourne to 12 other points in Australia.

Changi Airport welcomes 18.7 million passengers replied by QX179R @ Sat, 26 Jul 2008 09:24:59 +0800

Channel NewsAsia - Saturday, July
26

Changi Airport welcomes 18.7 million passengers in
first half

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Changi Airport registered good passenger
growth in the first half of this year.

It welcomed 18.7 million passengers during that period, a 5.4
per cent increase from the same period last year.

The numbers were released at the official opening of the
airport’s newest Terminal 3.

Six months since the terminal started operations, 5 million
passengers have passed through its gates.

The terminal currently handles more than 900 weekly scheduled
flights including Singapore Airline’s A380 jumbo jet.

Overall, Terminal 3 has a total passenger capacity of 22 million
a year. This represents about a third of Changi Airport’s total
passenger handling capacity including the Budget Terminal for
low—cost carriers.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, speaking at the official opening
of Terminal 3 on Friday, said planning for the terminal started in
the 1970s and it is this foresight that enabled Changi to expand
over the years in a systematic manner.

Today, the airport holds a special place in the hearts of
Singaporeans.

"Changi Airport is probably the only airport in the world which
students flock to during exams in search of a cool and pleasant
place to study, and I think it’s one of the few airports where
wedding couples come and take pictures," said Mr Lee.

Not everything, though, can be planned.

Mr Lee cited the growth of low—cost carriers and how Changi
reacted swiftly, building the Budget Terminal within eight
months.

The move has paid off. Low—cost carriers contributed some 11.5
per cent of passenger traffic at Changi Airport and 47 per cent of
its net growth in traffic.

Terminal 3 was 30 years in the making and already plans are
underway for a fourth airport terminal in Singapore.

Prime Minister Lee said that moving ahead, Changi Airport needs
to stay nimble and focused to face challenges like rising fuel cost
for airlines and competition from other airports.

Part of the strategy is the corporatisation of Changi Airport
and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). Mr Lee said
this is a major step forward to enable Changi to react faster to
new needs.

He also paid tribute to the staff, in what could be seen as a
move to allay fears of possible layoffs as a result of the
corporatisation exercise.

Mr Lee said: "We will not forget the importance of the people
who make Changi Airport work so well. It’s not the bricks and
mortar, it is not the lights or the architecture, it’s the people,
the team.

"We have a very special team and we will do our utmost to take
good care of them, both during and after the corporatisation
process."

The Transport Ministry will announce details of the
corporatisation exercise "soon", said Prime Minister Lee. —
